Graduation Speech Classroom Diversity - 1591 Words

Classroom Diversity I teach first grade in a public school. I have eighteen students in my class, eight girls and ten boys. In my classroom, I have a very diverse group of students. Some of the diversity in my classroom is very obvious and some is not. A lot of my students come from different racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds. Some of the diversity is not that visible. All students learn differently; meaning they have different learning styles, different levels of motivation and different worldviews. I do my best to recognize and accommodate the different diversities and learning styles in my class. An effective classroom manager deliberately plans for ways to motivate students. Motivation is one important part of effective classroom management† (Burden, 2013, p. 116). A student really needs to know themselves, value themselves, plan, act, and experience outcomes (Liberty University, (n.d). Therefore, I teach my students self – determination and I also use praise, which has great power. When they learn, are praised and eventually see what they are capable of, they are more motivated to want to do their absolute best. Classroom Procedures My classroom procedures include: entering the classroom, lining up, bathroom, lining up, getting the student’s attention, dismissal, and materials distribution and collection. When entering the classroom I greet each student with a hello and a high-five. Then, they put their belongings away, put their folders in the folder bin, and sit in their chair and begin their bell work. When lining up each student has a number based on their last name in alphabetical order. The students stand against the wall in the hallway in the line that was previously done. Then, three at a time they go to the bathroom. When getting the student’s attention I ask avery. For dismissal, I dismiss one pair at a time to get their belongings.
